Guinea Internet Access Restricted Before Referendum
Guinea has experienced significant internet disruptions since last weekend. Access to popular social media platforms-including Facebook, Messenger, tiktok, and YouTube-is nearly impossible, causing widespread frustration among users. These restrictions began shortly before the referendum election held on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
In N’Zérékoré, a city in southern Guinea, young people are especially affected. Many are resorting to VPN applications to circumvent these restrictions.

The timing of these disruptions raises concerns about potential limitations on freedom of information during the electoral process. Citizens rely on these platforms for news and interaction, and restricting access impacts their ability to participate fully in the democratic process.
Kerfala Camara, a local cyber cafe manager, noted the difficulties customers are facing. He stated that many rely on these services for work and staying connected with family.
