Sony has redefined the compact camera landscape with the release of the RX1R III, a full-frame 35mm camera poised to appeal to discerning photographers. Arriving a decade after it’s predecessor, the RX1R II, this new model integrates cutting-edge sensor technology and processing power into a remarkably portable design.
Redefining Portability in Full-Frame
The RX1R III distinguishes itself promptly through its size and weight. Tipping the scales at just 17 ounces, it undercuts the heft of competitors like the Leica Q3 and Fujifilm GFX100RF, making it an ideal companion for street photography, travel, and everyday shooting.This reduction in size is achieved, in part, by the unique design of the integrated Zeiss Sonnar T 35mm f/2 lens, which is partially recessed within the camera body. Despite its compact form, Sony assures users that the lens maintains the high levels of sharpness and color accuracy established in the previous generation. A dedicated macro ring allows for close-up photography, with a minimum focusing distance of 20cm.
Technological Advancements for Superior Image Quality
At the heart of the RX1R III lies a newly developed 61-megapixel Exmor R full-frame sensor, paired with sony’s latest image processing algorithms. This combination delivers exceptional image quality characterized by low noise levels and an expansive dynamic range – up to 15 stops, according to Sony. The sensor is further enhanced by an anti-reflective coating and the omission of an optical low-pass filter, maximizing detail capture.While the absence of a low-pass filter can occasionally introduce moiré patterns,the benefits in overall sharpness are significant.
Beyond still photography,the RX1R III offers 4K video recording at 30 frames per second with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling,alongside Full HD recording at up to 120fps. While lacking a dedicated log profile, the camera incorporates Sony’s S-Cinetone picture profile, which provides a cinematic look with enhanced dynamic range.
Intelligent Autofocus and Versatile Features
the RX1R III leverages Sony’s advanced Bionz XR and AI processing units to deliver highly accurate subject tracking.The camera can reliably identify and track human bodies,heads,and eyes,even when faces are obscured. This is facilitated by a 693-point phase-detection autofocus system, covering approximately 78% of the image area – mirroring the performance of Sony’s flagship A7R V model.Adding to its versatility, the RX1R III incorporates a “Step crop Shooting” function, allowing photographers to digitally crop the sensor to simulate focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm, similar to the functionality found in the Fujifilm GFX100RF.
Considerations in Design and Connectivity
While offering a wealth of features, the RX1R III presents a few design trade-offs. The electronic viewfinder (EVF) features a resolution of 2.36 million dots and 0.7x magnification, which is adequate but not class-leading.The rear LCD screen offers a respectable 2 million dots of resolution, but it is fixed in position, lacking the tilt and swivel functionality of the previous model – a decision made to minimize size and weight. Notably, the camera relies solely on electronic image stabilization, omitting in-body image stabilization (IBIS) or optical stabilization.
Connectivity options include a single SDXC UHS-II card slot, a microphone input, a micro-HDMI port, and a USB-C port. A headphone jack is not included.

The Sony RX1R III is available for pre-order now, with a price tag of $5,100.Shipping is scheduled to begin on July 31st. A range of accessories are also available, including a $300 thumb grip, a $250 body case, and a $200 lens hood.
