Chinese National Arrested for Theft on Narita Express, Police Investigate Potential Series of Thefts
Tokyo police have arrested a 58-year-old Chinese national, Long Yongjun, on suspicion of theft and fraud related to incidents on the Narita Express train line. The arrest follows allegations that Long stole a credit card and cash from a tourist and subsequently used the credit card to purchase a luxury camera.
Details of the Arrest and Allegations
According to police reports, Long Yongjun allegedly stole a credit card and approximately 100,000 yen (roughly $640 USD) from a Chinese tourist’s backpack on a Narita Express train traveling from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station last month. He then allegedly used the stolen credit card to purchase a camera valued at around 2.2 million yen (approximately $14,000 USD). NHK World reported the arrest on February 26, 2026.
Long Yongjun is currently unemployed and his address is unknown. He is reportedly denying the allegations. Police also arrested him on February 9th for allegedly attempting to steal cash from another Chinese tourist on a train heading to Narita Airport.
Travel History and Potential Connection to Other Thefts
The suspect entered Japan last month on a 30-day short-stay visa and has reportedly visited the country multiple times in the past. Authorities suspect Long targeted the Narita Express line due to its frequent leverage by foreign tourists. Police are investigating whether Long is connected to dozens of similar theft cases reported on the Narita Express since last fall.
Narita Express and Security Concerns
The Narita Express (N’EX) is a popular and convenient train service connecting Narita Airport to major stations in Tokyo and other destinations. JR East emphasizes the train’s speed and convenience, with travel times as short as 53 minutes to Tokyo Station. However, the recent increase in thefts has raised concerns about security on the line.
