Toyota Cites Price Discrepancy in Failed Agrinas Pickup Truck Deal

Jakarta – Toyota Astra Motor has explained its inability to fulfill a procurement request from PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara for pickup trucks intended for the Red and White Village Cooperative (Kopdes), citing a mismatch in pricing expectations. The state-owned agribusiness firm had sought to purchase a large volume of vehicles, but Toyota could not meet the requested price point.

Agrinas Sought Bulk Discount

Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota, President Director of Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, stated that the company had engaged with several domestic manufacturers, including Toyota, to procure pickups for the Kopdes. Agrinas aimed to secure a more economical price due to the large quantity of vehicles needed. “The main issue is that we buy in large quantities. So we offer to buy in bulk, in logs. We should be given a more economical price so that it is more effective and can meet the budget,” Joao said.

Toyota Confirms Price Disagreement

Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor, Jap Ernando Demily, confirmed discussions with Agrinas regarding the pickup truck procurement. However, Ernando explained that Toyota was unable to meet Agrinas’s price requirements. “Why can’t we fulfill the decision, I’m sorry, one example is the type of vehicle, price, we didn’t meet it. So, if it’s a production capacity issue, of course we can discuss it gradually,” Ernando stated to media outlets on March 6, 2026.

Taxation Impacts Pickup Truck Pricing

Ernando did not disclose the specific price offer made by Agrinas, but clarified that it was below the current selling price of Toyota’s 4×4 pickup trucks. He attributed the higher price of these vehicles to differing tax instruments compared to passenger cars. “The Hilux Double Cabin example costs IDR 456 million, but you as well need to pay attention if you look at the cost structure,” Ernando explained. “The price of the car is from On The Road. If we calculate it in more detail, there is the price of the vehicle itself, then there is luxury tax, there is BBN and so on. Taxes for 4×4 pickups in Indonesia are quite high because it is thought that they may be used more personally.”

This development follows Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota’s recent resignation as President Director of Agrinas, where he cited a lack of support from President Prabowo Subianto’s aides as a key factor. Tempo.co reported on August 12, 2025, that Joao expressed regret over his inability to contribute to Indonesia’s economy, and farmers.
