Ukraine Rejects Demilitarized Zone Proposal for Donbas, Eyes U.S. For Ceasefire Monitoring

Despite ongoing negotiations mediated by the United States, Ukraine remains firm in its refusal to cede control of the Donbas region to Russia. While discussions have centered on potential peace frameworks, including a U.S.-proposed demilitarized zone, Kyiv insists on maintaining its sovereignty over the territory. A key point of consensus reached during recent talks is the expectation that the United States would take the lead in monitoring any potential ceasefire agreement.

U.S. Proposal for a Demilitarized Zone

Recent peace talks in Geneva saw the United States propose the creation of a demilitarized zone in parts of the Donetsk region, to be jointly administered by Ukraine and Russia. However, Ukrainian officials deemed this plan unrealistic and incompatible with the current situation on the ground. According to Alexander Merezhko, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy, the proposal effectively meant relinquishing fortified defensive positions to the aggressor.

The U.S. Reportedly drew parallels to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, but Ukrainian officials pointed out the significant difference in the length of the front line, making a similar approach far more complex in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s Firm Stance on Sovereignty

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable. “These are our people, our flag and our control,” Zelenskyy stated, underscoring his commitment to maintaining Ukrainian sovereignty over the Donbas region.

Donbas: A Region of Contention

The Donbas region, comprised of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, was formerly Ukraine’s industrial heartland, rich in coal and minerals. Russia has long sought control over the region, and currently occupies approximately 90 percent of its territory. Moscow continues to demand the surrender of the remaining Ukrainian-controlled areas, threatening further military action if negotiations fail.

U.S. Role in Potential Ceasefire

Despite the unresolved territorial issues, both Ukraine and Russia have agreed that, should a ceasefire be established, the United States would play a central role in monitoring its implementation. This consensus suggests a continued reliance on U.S. Involvement in any potential resolution to the conflict.

Ongoing Negotiations and Public Opinion

Negotiations are ongoing, with the United States continuing to push for a peace deal. However, public opinion in the U.S. Remains largely opposed to ceding the Donbas region to Russia. A recent Council-Ipsos poll found that 67% of Americans consider allowing Moscow to acquire the territories seized in the current war unacceptable, and 76% object to Russia incorporating additional territories in eastern Ukraine.

President Trump has indicated a deal is close, but President Zelenskyy has reiterated Ukraine’s unwillingness to surrender territory.
