‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ Returns to Cinemas with Tarantino’s Definitive Cut
Quentin Tarantino’s epic revenge saga, Kill Bill, is set to return to the big screen with a newly restored and extended version titled Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Screenings are scheduled for April 17th, 18th, and 19th, offering fans a chance to experience the film as Tarantino always intended.
What’s New in ‘The Whole Bloody Affair’?
This definitive cut of Kill Bill includes several changes from the original release. Notably, the iconic fight scene against the Crazy 88 is now presented entirely in color, a departure from the original’s partial black-and-white presentation. An extended seven-minute anime sequence has also been added, and a break has been incorporated between the two volumes of the film, resulting in a total runtime of 275 minutes (including a 15-minute intermission).
A History of Controversy and Collaboration
The Kill Bill films, while celebrated for their action and style, were not without their challenges during production. A particularly harrowing incident involved Uma Thurman and a car crash on the set of Kill Bill: Vol. 2 in 2004. Thurman later revealed she suffered severe injuries in the accident and felt she had been pushed to drive a stunt car she wasn’t comfortable with.
Initially, Thurman refrained from publicly blaming Tarantino, but in 2018, she shared footage of the crash and stated the circumstances were “negligent to the point of criminality.” She recounted a conversation with Tarantino where he assured her the car was safe, despite it not being properly equipped, with the seat not secured and the road not being straight.
Tarantino has since acknowledged the incident as “one of the biggest regrets of my life” and a “horrendous mistake.” He explained he tested the car himself but failed to realize the danger of the return trip due to a twist in the road. He expressed remorse for not re-testing the route and for misleading Thurman about the safety of the vehicle. He stated he didn’t force her into the car, but she trusted him and believed his assurances.
