The survey, conducted by Kolmogorov Law, found that 42% of Americans would use AI before contacting a lawyer if they had a legal issue. This appeal stems from AI’s perceived speed, privacy, and cost-effectiveness. Nearly half of Americans (42%) also trust AI to help them prepare questions for a lawyer, viewing it as a tool for clarification and organization before a consultation. This suggests AI is emerging as a legal prescreening tool, helping individuals navigate initial concerns and gather information.

This trend isn’t a rejection of lawyers, but rather a continuation of digital habits. For years, Americans have turned to online searches for medical symptoms, employment rights, and tax questions before consulting professionals. AI simply condenses this process into a conversational format, offering immediate answers in stressful situations like landlord disputes, unexpected legal letters, or workplace conflicts.

A Prep Tool, Not a Substitute

However, Americans draw a firm line between preparation and decision-making. Whereas comfortable using AI to clarify terminology or outline potential next steps, they still recognize the need for professional interpretation and accountability from a licensed attorney. Clients increasingly want to arrive at consultations prepared, using billable time efficiently, making AI a cost-control and confidence-building tool.

Distrust Remains for a Significant Minority

For 24% of Americans, there is no trust in AI for any legal tasks. This skepticism is more pronounced among lower-income households, with nearly 29% of those earning under $50,000 rejecting AI for legal use, compared to just 8% among those earning $150,000 or more. This income gap suggests that confidence and financial security play a role in willingness to experiment with AI in legal matters.

The fundamental difference lies in accountability. Lawyers are licensed, regulated, and held to strict professional standards. AI tools are not. If a lawyer provides poor advice, there are ethical and disciplinary mechanisms in place. With AI, responsibility can be unclear.

Privacy and Comfort with AI

Interestingly, nearly 45% of Americans are comfortable sharing sensitive personal details with an AI chatbot to receive legal help, rising to 58% among parents. This comfort may stem from the perceived emotional neutrality of a chatbot, which doesn’t react or judge, and a belief that AI may be less biased than a human lawyer (15% of men felt this way, compared to 6% of women).

Transparency and the Future of AI in Law

A slim majority (51%) are comfortable with their lawyer using AI to assist in their case, viewing efficiency and modernization positively. However, a significant 60% believe lawyers should always disclose when AI is involved. This highlights a key aspect of the “trust gap”: the public isn’t anti-AI, but anti-ambiguity. Transparency is crucial for maintaining confidence, reinforcing that human accountability remains even when technology is used.

Even Gen Z Exercises Caution
