Busan’s Kumnarae Children’s Theater Receives National Performing Arts Funding

Busan Facilities Corporation’s Kumnarae Children’s Theater has been selected as a recipient of the ‘2026 Performing Arts Regional Distribution Support Project,’ securing 51.86 million won in government funding from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Management Support Center. This initiative aims to bolster performing arts accessibility outside of the metropolitan area.

Expanding Access to Performing Arts

The ‘Performing Arts Regional Distribution Support Project’ is a national program designed to address the concentration of performing arts opportunities in major cities and to enhance cultural experiences for residents in local communities. Kumnarae Children’s Theater’s successful application was based on its demonstrated ability to develop child- and family-focused content and its established experience in managing a public performance venue. Selection criteria emphasized both the feasibility of the proposed program and its potential for positive regional impact.

June Performances to Showcase Diverse Programming

The theater will host a series of five performances throughout the month of June, held every Saturday. The lineup includes:

  • Musical ‘Tuktakhani Oh Heung!’
  • Play ‘Anthony Brown’s I Like Books’
  • Chamber music ‘A Child and Me!’
  • ‘Kids Classic Concert – Animal Carnival’

A Milestone for Busan’s Cultural Landscape

This funding represents recognition of a public institution’s ability to compete successfully for national arts funding, and underscores Busan’s growing status as a significant cultural hub. Lee Seong-rim, chairman of the Busan Facilities Corporation, stated that the selection is “a meaningful achievement that has externally recognized the corporation’s ability to operate public cultural services.” He further emphasized the corporation’s commitment to revitalizing local performing arts distribution and expanding cultural welfare opportunities for Busan citizens.

The Busan Facilities Corporation manages a variety of facilities within the city, contributing to the quality of life for residents [1]. The Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism has also relocated several key organizations – including the Korean Film Council, the Korea Media Rating Board, and the Game Rating & Administration Committee – to Busan [2], further solidifying the city’s position within the national arts and culture sector.
