Czech RPG Kromlech Draws Inspiration from Conan and Gothic
The new Czech RPG Kromlech, developed by Perun Interactive, has launched in early access on Steam. The game, set in a dark fantasy world inspired by Celtic myths and legends, reportedly cost 100 million Czech crowns (approximately $4.1 million USD as of March 8, 2026) to develop. The studio funded the project, in part, through the success of their previous title, a homeless simulator.
Inspiration from Fantasy Classics
Kromlech places players in the role of Cronach, a warrior seeking glory and wealth in a brutal fantasy setting. According to Pavel Makal of Perun Interactive, the game draws significant inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian. “We are openly acknowledging Conan as a major inspiration, just as many in our studio grew up with fantasy films, books, and games in the late 80s and throughout the 90s,” Makal stated.
Beyond Conan, the developers too cite the Gothic video game series, as well as the fantasy works of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, and Elric of Melniboné as key influences on the game’s design and atmosphere.
From Homeless Simulator to Fantasy RPG
The development of Kromlech was financially supported by the success of Perun Interactive’s earlier game, a simulator focused on the life of a homeless person. This unconventional funding source allowed the studio to bring their vision of a dark, Celtic-inspired RPG to life.
Gameplay and Setting
Kromlech is set in a world based on Celtic mythology, featuring stone circles (kromlech in Czech) as prominent landmarks. Players will navigate a harsh and unforgiving landscape, battling enemies and striving for fortune. The game emphasizes a raw and uncompromising gameplay experience.
Reception
Early impressions of Kromlech highlight its immersive atmosphere and challenging gameplay. Further reviews will determine the game’s overall success and player reception.
