Luxon Receives Samoan Chiefly Title Amidst Claims of Prior Request

Samoa bestowed an honorary matai title upon Novel Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon during a visit to Apia, though the presentation was preceded by conflicting statements regarding whether Luxon had requested the honor. The bestowal, a traditional mark of respect, occurred despite initial claims by Samoan Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt that New Zealand’s High Commissioner had indicated Luxon sought the title.

Initial Claims and Denials

The controversy began with comments made by La’aulialemalietoa in a livestreamed interview with Samoan outlet Talamua Media, subsequently reported by Samoa Global News. He stated that the New Zealand High Commissioner to Samoa had informed him of Luxon’s request for a matai title. However, a spokesperson for Luxon quickly refuted this claim, stating that the prime minister had not requested the title. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade also denied the assertion, clarifying that the High Commissioner had simply sought advance notice of any planned honors to ensure Luxon was prepared. RNZ

The Bestowal and Subsequent Discussion

Despite the initial dispute, Luxon was presented with the matai title, “Tuisinavemaulumotootua,” during a state dinner. The title signifies Luxon as the head or king of two traditional meeting grounds in Apia, “Sinavema” and “ulumotootua.” La’aulialemalietoa addressed apparent dissent regarding the bestowal, urging those concerned to “let the village of Apia sort it out and handle it with respect,” adding, “It is normal for us here.” Newsroom

A Tradition with Evolving Perspectives

Luxon is not the first New Zealand Prime Minister to receive a matai title. previous recipients include Sir Robert Muldoon, David Lange, Jim Bolger, Sir John Key, and Sir Bill English, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters. However, the practice has faced increasing scrutiny, particularly from younger generations in Samoa. Aupito William Sio, a former New Zealand minister with Samoan heritage, noted that the ease with which non-Samoan leaders receive the title contrasts with the rigorous process and generational commitment required for Samoans to earn the honor. Responsibilities and Expectations

Receiving a matai title carries responsibilities, including a continued commitment to serving the community that bestowed the honor. Sio observed that some politicians who receive the title primarily utilize it during election campaigns, with limited subsequent engagement with the community. Newsroom
