Neurological Sleep Lab: Saxony Addresses Long Wait Times for Diagnosis

New Sleep Lab Opens in Meißen to Address Growing Sleep Disorder Crisis

A new neurological sleep laboratory has opened in Meißen, Germany, aiming to alleviate long waiting times for sleep disorder diagnoses and treatment in the Saxony region. Approximately one-third of the population suffers from sleep problems, with six percent experiencing chronic sleep deprivation—a condition that often worsens with age.1

Addressing a Critical Gap in Care

Moritz Brandt, head of neurology at the Elblandklinikum Meißen, highlighted the significant demand for increased sleep disorder services. “Sleep problems are one of the most common key symptoms in medicine. We can as well see this in the waiting times in the existing 20 sleep laboratories in Saxony, where patients have to wait between six and nine months to get an examination. So there is a substantial gap in care,” he stated.1 The new facility, equipped with four beds in single rooms, seeks to reduce these wait times and provide more timely access to specialized care.

What Sets a Neurological Sleep Lab Apart?

Unlike general sleep laboratories, the Meißen facility focuses specifically on brain activity and neurological diseases. Patients like Uta Klatt are among the first to benefit from this specialized approach. Before sleep, patients are meticulously connected to equipment that measures brain waves, breathing signals, and muscle tone to identify the root causes of sleep disturbances.1

Patient Experience: Uta Klatt’s Story

Uta Klatt shared her experience, stating, “I’m very exhausted, tired and don’t sleep well.” She explained that her sleep is no longer restorative, significantly impacting her daily work life.1 The lab aims to pinpoint the causes of such sleep issues, which often remain elusive without professional evaluation.

How the Lab Works

The neurological sleep laboratory utilizes cameras and measurement systems to record and monitor patients’ sleep patterns. This comprehensive data collection allows clinicians to gain a detailed understanding of a patient’s sleep architecture and identify potential neurological factors contributing to their sleep problems.1
