alarming rate of Undiagnosed Diabetes in African children
Dakar – Pediatrician and diabetologist Babacar Niang urged health workers in Dakar on Friday to increase diabetes screening, particularly during routine consultations. He emphasized a critical issue: 20% of children with diabetes in Africa remain unscreened.
“Studies reveal that for every diagnosed diabetic child in Africa, four others go undetected. This means only 20% of diabetic children receive a diagnosis,” he stated.
Professor Babacar Niang, coordinator of the Changing Diabetes in Children Senegal (CDIC) program – a dedicated initiative for the care and treatment of children living with diabetes – addressed the press as part of World Diabetes Day preparations, focusing on the theme “Diabetes and the workplace”.
The 80% of undiagnosed diabetic children across the continent represent a significant loss, as they are often missed and left without crucial care, he explained during the meeting organized by the Senegalese Diabetic Support Association (ASSAD).
