Trump Claims Victory, Announces Potential Iran Deal Amidst Ongoing Conflict
President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the United States has effectively “won” the ongoing conflict with Iran, while simultaneously suggesting that negotiations are underway for a potential peace deal. These statements came during a ceremony in the Oval Office for Markwayne Mullin, the newly sworn-in Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Conflicting Narratives on Negotiations
Despite Trump’s claims of progress, Iranian officials have denied that direct negotiations with the U.S. Are taking place. Trump indicated that Iran has made a “extremely significant prize” offer related to the Strait of Hormuz, but declined to provide specifics. He alluded to a shift in Iranian leadership, stating, “They gave us a present, and the present arrived today…It was a very nice thing they did. But what it showed me is that we’re dealing with the right people.”
U.S. Presents 15-Point Peace Plan
According to the Associated Press, Iran has received a 15-point peace plan from the U.S. To end the war. Trump suggested that Tehran is eager to reach a deal, even while publicly denying direct talks with Washington. He also stated that keeping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is a top priority, ranking as “No. 1, 2 and 3” on the list of points of agreement.
Military Movements and Continued Attacks
The U.S. Is increasing its military presence in the Middle East, with thousands of U.S. Marines and elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division being deployed. Simultaneously, the U.S. And Israel continue to launch attacks on Iranian targets. On Tuesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard reported a strike on a gas supply line feeding a power station in southwest Iran, and another projectile hit Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Recent Leadership Changes in Iran
Trump characterized the recent changes in Iranian leadership as a “regime change,” noting that the new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, is the son of the former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier in the conflict. While the new leader has remained out of public view and is believed to be wounded, the Islamic Republic’s power structure, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, remains largely intact.
Trump’s Stance on Trust
When questioned about his trust in Iranian officials, Trump responded, “I don’t trust anybody,” adding, “I don’t trust you.” Despite this skepticism, he believes that Iran will ultimately agree to a deal.
