Battlefield 6 Layoffs Follow Record-Breaking Launch
Despite a massively successful launch that saw Battlefield 6 become the best-selling game of 2025 in the United States, Electronic Arts (EA) has begun laying off staff across its Battlefield studios. The cuts impact teams at Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios, according to reports from IGN, GameSpot, TheGamer, and PCGamesN.
A Multi-Studio Approach
To compete with the Call of Duty franchise, EA merged several development teams to create Battlefield Studios. This coalition included DICE and Ripple Effect, alongside Motive Studios (known for the Dead Space remake and Star Wars Battlefront 2) and Criterion Games (of Burnout and Require For Speed Most Wanted fame). Each team within Battlefield Studios focused on different aspects of the Battlefield 6 experience.
Initial Success and Record Sales
The multi-studio approach initially proved fruitful. Battlefield 6 achieved a peak player count of 747,000 on Steam and sold seven million units in its first three days, surpassing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in US sales. The game was widely praised as a return to form for the series, and Battlefield Labs was highlighted as a successful initiative for incorporating player feedback.
Post-Launch Challenges and Layoffs
Despite the strong launch, Battlefield 6 faced criticism regarding map sizes, progression issues, and concerns about the employ of AI-generated assets. The post-launch content offering, including the delayed Season 2, also failed to meet player expectations. Even with these struggles, and despite the game’s substantial sales, EA proceeded with a “realignment” across the Battlefield franchise, resulting in layoffs as reported by IGN. The number of employees affected has not been disclosed. EA also released a free-to-play spinoff, Battlefield Redsec, intended to compete with Call of Duty Warzone, but this did not prevent the staff reductions according to GameSpot.
Looking Ahead
The layoffs at Battlefield Studios highlight the challenges of maintaining momentum after a successful game launch. While Battlefield 6 achieved significant commercial success, EA is clearly focused on optimizing its development structure for future titles in the franchise as noted by TheGamer.
