Hong Kong Showcases Global Appeal at APAIE 2026

Hong Kong recently hosted the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2026 Conference and Exhibition, from February 23 to 27, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event, led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) with co-hosting support from seven other University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities, highlighted the city’s unique blend of academic excellence and cultural immersion for international students.

Immersive Experiences for Delegates

CUHK curated a program that extended beyond traditional conference sessions, offering delegates firsthand experiences of Hong Kong’s character. Activities included an early-morning Tai Chi class and run along the Wanchai Promenade, providing a serene view of Victoria Harbour. Delegates also enjoyed a ride on the Peak Tram and panoramic views from Sky Terrace 428, showcasing the city’s iconic skyline.

Positive Feedback from International Educators

Attendees from around the globe praised Hong Kong’s safety, orderliness, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. David Huerta, from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, noted the city’s welcoming environment and global connectivity. Christina Valdivieso, also from Mexico, was struck by the contrast between the city’s skyscrapers and its natural surroundings, including mountains and the Considerable Buddha.

Trevor Goddard, Associate Director of Global Programmes at Federation University Australia, emphasized how engaging in local activities provided cultural insights. Derek Bradley of Grove City College in the United States observed the city’s ongoing development and the positive experiences reported by his students who have studied in Hong Kong.

Cyria Liaudet from Institut Mines-Telecom Business School in France highlighted the city’s bilingualism and vibrant nightlife.

Campus Tours and Collegiate Atmosphere

The conference concluded with campus visits to the eight UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong. Tours of CUHK provided delegates with direct exposure to the facilities and learning environment. Tina Odenthal from the University of Bonn in Germany praised the collegiate atmosphere and residential communities at CUHK. Ellen Wijkmark, international coordinator at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, emphasized the practical strengths of the campus, including accessibility and student support services.

APAIE 2026 reinforced Hong Kong’s position as a leading destination for international study and cultural exchange. The event equipped delegates with firsthand experiences and connections to promote Hong Kong’s universities and its unique offerings to students worldwide. The Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, highlighted Hong Kong’s advantages in global connectivity, infrastructure, and cultural experiences, as well as the international renown of its universities.
