A Family Affair: Young Jockey Finds Success with Father’s Support
The thrill of victory is often amplified when shared with loved ones, a sentiment keenly felt by rising jockey, recently experiencing a surge in success on the Australian racing circuit. his recent achievements have been made even more special by the unexpected, yet welcome, presence of his father, who extended his stay after initially planning a brief visit.
“It was astounding having Dad here,” the 21-year-old shared. “He came over for my frist ride and was so impressed, he decided to prolong his trip. The excitement was palpable, especially after a near-miss with Billy Lincoln – we were confident he’d be in contention.”
From Southland Roots to Australian Pursuits
The jockey’s passion for racing is deeply ingrained, stemming from a childhood spent immersed in the thoroughbred world of Southland, New Zealand.His mother, Kerry Taplin, boasts a distinguished training career spanning over two decades, achieving 177 domestic wins, including 60 in partnership with her husband. The family’s Isla Bank dairy farm served as a base for preparing horses, often distinguished by names incorporating “Tap.”
This upbringing provided a solid foundation, akin to a young musician learning from seasoned professionals within their family band. He was exposed to the intricacies of horse care and training from an early age, gaining invaluable experience. He also benefited from a close association with veteran trainer Sheila Laxon, notably working with the legendary Melbourne Cup winner, Knight’s Choice.
“Growing up around the horses in Southland was formative,” he explained. “I rode trackwork as a teenager, but took a break from racing for a few years.it wasn’t until we relocated to Australia that I fully re-engaged, working with Sheila and my parents.”
Rekindling the Passion and Building Momentum
The family’s move to the Sunshine Coast in mid-2022 marked a new chapter, fueled by a shared dream of breeding and training horses.This transition reignited his passion for racing, providing opportunities to hone his skills and build connections within the industry. His involvement with Knight’s Choice was particularly impactful, even accompanying the champion to Sydney for the prestigious Golden Eagle (A$10 million, 1500m).
This experience, much like an apprentice chef learning from a master, proved invaluable. He credits these early experiences with shaping his approach to racing and fostering a deep understanding of equine athleticism. Currently, he is focused on building his profile and securing consistent rides, aiming to establish himself as a prominent force in the Australian racing landscape. He is currently ranked within the top 50 jockeys in Queensland based on prize money earned this season, demonstrating a clear upward trajectory.
