Apple CEO Tim Cook made a surprise appearance in Detroit on Friday, Sept. 19, thrilling a crowd of hundreds who had lined up to check out the new downtown Apple Store.
Amid loud cheers and clapping, the famous tech executive opened the front doors of the store for business at 5 p.m. He then lingered outside for several minutes, shaking hands and posing for selfies as customers streamed in.
There were several hundred people waiting in line to enter the new store at 1430 Woodward Ave., next to the Shinola Hotel. The arrival of a downtown Apple store has been a long-awaited event in the city and is viewed by many downtown boosters as a further demonstration of Detroit’s comeback after years of struggles and the 2013-14 municipal bankruptcy.
