Topaz Labs has launched Gigapixel 8, the latest iteration of its popular AI-powered software designed to upscale images without sacrificing detail. This powerful tool utilizes machine learning algorithms trained on millions of images to enlarge digital photographs and rendered images up to 16x their original size, preserving sharpness and minimizing noise.

While primarily targeted towards photographers, Gigapixel 8 also proves invaluable for CGI artists. Its AI mode, introduced in version 5.3, allows users to upscale low-resolution renders, generate high-resolution images faster, and even remove noise by upscaling and then reducing images to their original size.

Gigapixel 8 introduces a groundbreaking generative AI-based Redefine model. This innovative feature utilizes generative AI to fill in missing details when upscaling images to exceptionally high resolutions, effectively repairing damaged images.

“Gigapixel 8.0 is the first upscaler using generative AI models to create high-quality photorealistic results,” claims Topaz Labs.

The Redefine model offers a unique Creativity setting, allowing users to control the level of stylization. Low settings produce realistic sharpening, while higher settings generate progressively more stylized results. Notably, users can also input text prompts for high Creativity settings, guiding the AI in generating specific details, akin to traditional generative AI tools.

Gigapixel 8 also introduces updates to its existing Face Recovery model, now dubbed Gen 2. This enhanced model delivers improved performance when upscaling profile views, produces cleaner teeth and eyeglasses, and excels at recovering obscured faces with minimal facial features.

Adding to its versatility, Gigapixel 8 allows users to process images in the cloud in addition to their local machines. This cloud rendering feature is available for both the Redefine and Recover AI models, providing greater flexibility and scalability. Cloud rendering costs vary depending on image size and the AI model used, starting at $5 for 20 credits.

Gigapixel 8.0 is available as a standalone application for Windows 10+ and macOS 11.0+, as well as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom Classic.

Pricing starts at $99 for a standard license, with a subscription-based Gigapixel Pro edition aimed at studios priced at $499 per year.
