Honda ZR-V Updated in Japan: Hybrid-Only Powertrain and Latest Trims
Honda has released a refreshed version of the ZR-V for the Japanese market, marking a significant shift with a hybrid-only powertrain and the introduction of new trim levels. The update, arriving nearly four years after the initial launch, positions the ZR-V as the Japanese equivalent of the North American HR-V [Carscoops].
Hybrid-Only Powertrain
The most notable change is the discontinuation of the 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine. The 2026 ZR-V will now exclusively feature a 2.0-liter e:HEV hybrid system, producing a combined power output of 181 hp. This system combines a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine (Atkinson cycle, 141 PS and 182 Nm) with an electric motor, delivering 184 PS and 315 Nm of torque [Paultan]. Both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) options are available.
New Trim Levels and Styling Updates
The ZR-V lineup has been streamlined, with the X trim being discontinued, leaving the Z as the standard model. Two new variants have been added: the Black Style and the Cross Touring [Honda Japan].
Z Trim
The Z trim receives new color options, including Twilight Mist Black Pearl, Meteoroid Gray Metallic, and Seabed Blue Pearl. It also features a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels with five double spokes. The exterior design remains largely unchanged, retaining the signature vertical slat grille.
Black Style Trim
Building on the Z trim, the Black Style variant adopts a darker aesthetic. Key features include a honeycomb grille, Crystal Black Pearl accents, 18-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels, and a dark interior treatment.
Cross Touring Trim
The newly introduced Cross Touring trim offers a more rugged appearance. It incorporates design elements inspired by the US-spec HR-V, such as a honeycomb grille, a unique front bumper with a skid plate, side rocker panels (available as a dealer option), and matte black wheels. An exclusive Desert Beige Pearl color with beige leather interior and orange stitching is also available [CarsGuide].
Enhanced Standard Features
The updated ZR-V boasts a range of enhanced standard features, including a 9-inch infotainment system with Google built-in, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, heated and electrically adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control, and a multi-view camera system [Carscoops].
Pricing and Availability
Honda will announce the official pricing for the 2026 ZR-V on March 26th, with sales expected to begin in March [Paultan].
