German Chancellor Calls for Syrian Refugees to Leave

Jakarta – Syrian refugees in Germany are being asked to return to their country. The order comes from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

As reported by AFP and Al-Arabiya news agencies on Tuesday,November 4,2025,Merz stated there is currently “no reason” for Syrians who fled the 13-year war to seek asylum in Germany. This is Merz’s latest strong statement regarding refugees.

“For those who refuse to return to their country, of course we can expel them,” he said during a visit to Husum, in northern Germany on Monday, November 3, local time.

German foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during a visit to Damascus, Syria on Thursday, said the possibility for Syrians to return home is “very limited” due to widespread destruction of infrastructure caused by the war.

The remarks sparked debate about the feasibility and ethics of returning refugees to a country still grappling with the aftermath of conflict.
