outokumpu, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel, announced today it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boston metal, a technology company working to change how metals are made, to improve the production of important carbon-free metals used in industries like defense and aerospace.

Under the MoU, the companies plan to start a joint project to use Outokumpu’s high-quality chromium material in key parts of Boston Metal’s Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology*. They also want to make Outokumpu’s operations more efficient and better at reusing materials.

The companies will focus on thes evaluations:

  • Boston Metal will test its MOE technology to improve recycling within Outokumpu’s operations and help Outokumpu reuse more materials.
  • Outokumpu will provide chrome-oxide and chromium from its Kemi mine in Finland to Boston Metal. This will help Boston Metal increase and secure the supply of a key part – the inert anode – for its MOE technology, which is used to make Green Steel.

“I’m very excited about this project with Boston Metal. This collaboration can build on the Outokumpu technology we announced at our Capital Markets Day in early June 2025, and
