Former British PM Tony Blair Prepared to Lead Transition Government in Gaza

London – former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is involved in discussions about leading the post-conflict transition authority in Gaza, Palestine. The proposal for a temporary government in Gaza is said to have the support of the United States (US).

Reported by BBC on Sunday (2/28/2025), the proposal, reportedly backed by the White House, suggests placing Blair as the leader of a government authority supported by the United Nations adn Gulf countries before handing control of Gaza back to Palestine.

BlairS office stated it would not support any proposal that displaced the Gaza population from Gaza. Blair, who led Britain into the 2003 Iraq war, has become part of high-level planning discussions with the US and other parties regarding the future of Gaza.

In August 2025, he also joined a meeting at the White House with Trump to discuss the plan described by the US envoy for the Middle East, steve Witkoff, as ‘vrey thorough’. However, limited information about the meeting has been revealed.

The plan could place Blair as the head of an organization named the Gaza International Transition authority (GITA). Media Economist and Israeli media report that this plan will seek a UN mandate to become the ‘highest political authority and law’ in Gaza for 5 years.

This plan will be modeled after the international governments that oversaw the transitions of East Timor and Kosovo towards nationhood. Initially, the plan will be centered in Egypt, near the southern border of Gaza, before entering Gaza after the territory stabilizes with multinational troops.

as PM, blair made the decision to deploy British troops in the 2003 iraq war, which was strongly criticized in an official investigation.

Proposals for Gaza’s Future and the Ongoing Conflict (Updated September 28, 2024)

The future governance of the Gaza Strip has been the subject of numerous proposals amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, with a Hamas attack on Israel resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. Israel’s subsequent military operation in Gaza has, as of September 28, 2024, resulted in at least 37,962 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry (as reported by the Associated Press and other sources). A UN investigation commission has alleged that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a claim Israel vehemently denies. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has drastically deteriorated since the start of the conflict.

Several plans for post-conflict Gaza have emerged, often clashing in their vision and feasibility.

US Proposals & concerns Regarding Forced Displacement:

Former US President Donald Trump proposed a plan involving a “long-term ownership position” for Gaza, envisioning it as a “Middle East Riviera.” This plan, however, included the forced transfer of palestinians, a move widely condemned as a violation of international law. Both the US and Israel have maintained that any emigration from Gaza would be “voluntary,” though concerns remain about the coercive environment and potential for displacement.

Arab & Palestinian Plans Rejected by US & Israel:

In March 2024, the US and Israel rejected an Arab plan for the aftermath of the conflict. This plan would have allowed the 2.1 million Palestinians currently residing in Gaza to remain and be governed temporarily by an Independent Expert Committee, supported by the deployment of International Peace Guard Forces. Palestinian and hamas authorities welcomed the Arab proposal.

International Efforts & the Transition Administrative Committee:

in July 2024, an international conference in New York, led by France and Saudi Arabia, proposed the establishment of a “Transition Administrative Committee” for Gaza. This committee would operate “under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority.” Notably, the US and Israel were not present at this conference.

The resulting “New York Declaration” gained support from a majority of members of the UN General Assembly through a resolution passed earlier this month (September 2024). several countries, including Britain, France, Canada, and Australia, have recently officially recognized the State of Palestine.

Recent Developments (as of September 28, 2024):
