Syrian President to Russia, Requests Putin Hand Over Assad

Damascus – Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa made his frist visit to Russia on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. He intends to ask President Vladimir Putin to hand over former Syrian rulers, including Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia after being removed from power.

“sharaa will ask the Russian President to hand over all individuals who committed war crimes and are in Russia, especially Bashar al-Assad,” a Syrian goverment official stated anonymously, according to AFP on October 15, 2025.

Assad was overthrown in December of last year after a lengthy rule in Syria.He is known to have sought refuge in Russia.The Syrian government seeks his accountability for alleged war crimes. Al-SharaaS visit signals a firm request for Russia’s cooperation in bringing Assad to justice. This move represents a notable step in Syria’s transition and pursuit of accountability for past actions.
