A Milwaukee cyclist, Zane Staubach, is recounting a terrifying ordeal after being the victim of a hit-and-run collision three weeks ago at the intersection of 2nd and National. The incident left Staubach with significant injuries and a profound emotional impact, raising concerns about driver accountability and cyclist safety in the city.
A Lifelong Passion Interrupted
For Staubach, cycling isn’t merely a hobby; it’s a deeply ingrained lifestyle. He describes a dedication that spanned years, even during challenging weather conditions. “I consistently cycled to work in Colorado springs, regardless of the weather – snow, sleet, or sunshine, for four consecutive years,” he explained. This commitment carried over to Milwaukee, where cycling was a regular part of his daily routine, until the collision dramatically altered his life.
The incident occured when a driver disregarded a red light, colliding forcefully with Staubach and his bicycle. He vividly recalls the moment of impact: “It felt like flying, followed by the terrifying realization that I was about to hit the ground hard.”
The Aftermath and the Driver’s Actions
The driver of the vehicle, identified as operating an SUV, did not stop to render aid. Rather, they fled the scene, continuing down 1st Street with Staubach’s bicycle entangled in the vehicle’s grill. This act of abandonment has been notably distressing for Staubach. “The thought that the driver prioritized avoiding responsibility over ensuring my well-being is incredibly painful,” he stated.”To assume I might have been fatally injured and still choose to escape, focusing only on removing my bike from their vehicle, is deeply unsettling.”
Fortunately, Staubach received immediate assistance from concerned bystanders and othre motorists who remained at the scene until emergency services arrived. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), hit-and-run crashes are on the rise nationally, accounting for approximately 11% of all traffic crashes in 2022, a significant increase from previous years.
Physical and Emotional Scars
The impact of the crash has been ample. Staubach was unable to get out of bed for three days following the incident and continues to experience soreness. He bears a visible reminder of the collision – an imprint resembling the front of an Explorer, including what appears to be a Ford emblem, on his thigh.
