UN Warns of Worsening Sexual Violence in Eastern DRC
The escalating crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) paints a grim picture, with the UN human rights chief predicting a potential surge in sexual violence, including rape and sexual slavery.
UN Emergency Meeting
Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, issued his stark warning on Friday during an emergency meeting convened by the DRC at the UN Human Rights Council. The meeting focused on the severe human rights violations inflicted by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels, who have seized control of the strategic city of Goma and are rapidly expanding their territory.
“If nothing is done, the worst may be yet to come, for the people of the eastern DRC, but also beyond the country’s borders,” Turk declared to a room filled with diplomats and rights groups in Geneva.
“All those with influence must act urgently to put an end to this tragic situation.”
Horrifying Reports of Abuse
Turk expressed profound horror at the mounting reports of rape, gang rape, and sexual slavery emerging from the conflict zone.
“This is likely to worsen in the current circumstances,” he cautioned.
The international community is under increasing pressure to take decisive action to protect civilians in the DRC and halt the atrocities committed by the M23 rebels. The potential for a humanitarian crisis looms large, and the global spotlight must remain fixed on this unfolding tragedy.
Take Action:
*Stay informed about the situation in the DRC.*
*Support organizations providing humanitarian aid to those affected.*
*Advocate for increased pressure on all parties to uphold international human rights law.*
