sulitnya Pintu Masuk ke AS bagi Warga Palestina

Washington DC – The United States (US) made it arduous for the entry of Palestinians, even the President Palestine to his country. almost all visa submissions from Palestinian citizens were rejected by the US.

Reported Reuters And Al Arabiya Monday (1/9/2025), the government of US President Donald Trump has rejected and revoked a visa for officials of the Palestinian Liberation Association (PLO) and Palestinian Authority, based in the west Bank, ahead of the UN General Assembly as it is indeed considered to ‘damage the prospect of peace’.

The policy made Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas unable to enter the US ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York. A US foreign department official who declined to be named said Abbas and around 80 other Palestinians were affected by the decision announced on Friday (29/8) local time.

Abbas has planned a trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly which was held on an annual basis. This year, the UN General Assembly was held in September.

Abbas is also scheduled to attend a peak meeting, which was held by France and Saudi Arabia, where France,Britain,Canada and Australia had officially promised to recognize the Palestinian state. The Abbas office said that his party was surprised by the US decision to refuse and revoke the visa. Palestine said Trump’s decision violated the UN ‘Headquarters agreement’.

Based on the ‘United Nations Headquarters’ in 1947, the US is generally required to allow access for foreign diplomats to the UN headquarters in New York. Though, Washington said they could reject visas for security reasons, extremism, and foreign policy.

The US Department of State confirmed his decision by re-expanding the old accusation about PLO and Palestinian authority has failed in rejecting extremism and accusing an attempt to encourage ‘unilateral recognition’ of the Palestinian state.

“This is for the sake of our national security to request the accountability of PLO and Palestinian authority for thier non-compliance with their commitment, and as it damages the prospects of peace,” said the US State Department.

US Suspends Visa Services for Palestinian Citizens from West Bank and Diaspora

The U.S. State department has suspended visa services for Palestinian citizens residing in the West Bank and those in the palestinian Diaspora, building on earlier restrictions targeting residents of the Gaza Strip. The move, announced recently,is part of a review prompted by unspecified security concerns. This follows a previous suspension two weeks prior, which halted all non-immigrant visa processing for individuals from Gaza while the State Department conducted a “full and extensive” review. The decision has drawn criticism from pro-Palestinian advocacy groups. Prior to the suspensions, the U.S. had issued a meaningful number of B1/B2 visitor visas to Palestinian Authority Travel Document holders, exceeding 3,800 in total, including 640 issued in May alone, according to data from the U.S. State Department. These visas allow foreign citizens to travel to the U.S.for purposes such as medical treatment.

Background and Context

The initial visa restrictions targeting Gaza were announced amid heightened tensions in the region. The State Department has not publicly detailed the specific security concerns driving the broader suspension impacting the West Bank and Diaspora Palestinians. The move raises concerns about access to essential services, including healthcare, for Palestinian citizens.

Impact on Palestinians

The suspension of visa services substantially impacts Palestinians seeking to travel to the United States for various reasons, including:

Medical Treatment: Many Palestinians travel to the U.S. for specialized medical care unavailable in the Palestinian territories.
Family Visits: The restrictions hinder family reunification and visits.
Educational Opportunities: Students and scholars may be unable to pursue educational opportunities in the U.S. Business and Other Travel: The visa suspension affects legitimate travel for business, conferences, and other purposes.

US State Department Statement

While the State Department has not released a detailed description, a spokesperson stated the review is ongoing and that the U.S. remains committed to engaging with the Palestinian people. The spokesperson indicated that the restrictions are temporary and will be lifted once the security review is complete. https://www.state.gov/ (This link directs to the State Department’s main website for further information.)

Criticism and Concerns

Pro-Palestinian groups have condemned the visa suspensions as collective punishment and discriminatory. They argue that the restrictions unfairly target an entire population based on unsubstantiated security concerns. Critics also point to the potential humanitarian consequences of denying Palestinians access to medical care and other essential services in the U.S.
