Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’ Star, Dies at 53 After ALS Battle

Eric Dane, best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan in “Grey’s Anatomy” and Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria,” has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His death occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, according to a statement released by his family.

Rising to Fame

Dane gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” in the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” appearing from 2006 to 2012 and again in 2021. He later took on the role of Cal Jacobs, a troubled husband, in the HBO series “Euphoria,” a role he held until his death. Prior to these roles, Dane appeared in series such as “Bayside School,” “Married… with Children,” and “Charmed,” as well as the film “X-Men: The Last Stand.”

ALS Diagnosis and Advocacy

Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. Following his diagnosis, he became an advocate for raising awareness and funding research for the disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Most patients die within three to five years of diagnosis.

Personal Life and Legacy

Born on November 9, 1972, Dane was raised in California. His father, a Navy soldier, died when Dane was seven years old. He is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, whom he married in 2004, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice (born March 3, 2010) and Georgia Geraldine (born December 28, 2011). Dane and Gayheart separated in 2018.

Dane was preparing to release a memoir, “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” scheduled for publication at the end of 2026. In the book, he reflects on key moments in his life, from his early days on “Grey’s Anatomy” to the birth of his daughters and his experience with ALS. He expressed his hope that the book would offer meaning to others facing challenges.

“He spent his last days surrounded by close friends, his wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” the family statement read. “During his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for those facing the same struggle. We will miss him deeply and always remember him fondly. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the love and support he received.”
