Bulgaria’s Petrohan Deaths: Unraveling a Complex Case of Alleged Abuse and Sect-Like Practices

In early February 2026, Bulgaria was shaken by the discovery of six bodies across two separate locations in the mountains, a case quickly dubbed the “Bulgarian Twin Peaks.” The deaths of Ivaylo Kalushev, a speleologist and self-proclaimed spiritual leader, along with five others, have sparked investigations into allegations of sexual abuse, cult-like practices, and potential political entanglements. This article examines the unfolding details of the Petrohan case, the individuals involved, and the emerging questions surrounding their deaths.

The Initial Discoveries

On February 2nd, authorities found three men dead inside a mountain lodge near Petrohan: 49-year-old Ivaylo Ivanov, 45-year-old Decho Iliev, and 51-year-old Plamen Stattev. A week later, on February 9th, three more bodies were discovered in an abandoned camper van under Okolchitsa Peak: 51-year-old Ivaylo Kalushev, 22-year-old Nikolay Zlatkov, and 15-year-old Alexander Makulev. The discovery of the latter three, found with their fingers intertwined, deepened the mystery and raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Ivaylo Kalushev and the “Closed Society”

Ivaylo Kalushev is at the center of the investigation. Authorities describe him as leading a “closed society with elements of a sect” that operated between Bulgaria and Mexico, attracting vulnerable individuals and families seeking spiritual guidance. The group allegedly engaged in manipulation, abuse, and systematic control, potentially leading to the six deaths. Kalushev had reportedly been involved in environmental activism and led mountain ranger groups.

Forensic Evidence and Gunpowder Residue

Preliminary ballistic findings revealed substantial gunpowder particles on the hands of both Ivaylo Kalushev and Nikolay Zlatkov. Residue was likewise found on the palms of Decho Iliev and Plamen Stattev. Further testing is underway to examine clothing for additional traces of gunpowder on Ivaylo Ivanov, due to extensive blood contamination on his hands. Spent shell casings recovered at the scene originated from a Glock pistol found near the deceased.

Key Individuals and Relationships

Several individuals were closely connected to Kalushev and are now under scrutiny:

  • Nevena Staeva: Staeva was described as the longest-serving member of Kalushev’s group, having lived with him in Mexico and reportedly selling property to support the group. She expressed grief over the deaths on Facebook, stating, “You are the light. Be free! I love you.” Prior to the discovery of the bodies, she wrote about attempts to denigrate those involved. According to a 2024 report by DANS (Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security), Staeva was considered an “alibi” for Kalushev.
  • Nikolay Zlatkov: A student of Kalushev, Zlatkov was found dead alongside Kalushev and Alexander Makulev.
  • Alexander Makulev: A 15-year-old student of Kalushev, Makulev was found dead with Zlatkov and Kalushev.
  • Valeri Andreev: Andreev lived with Kalushev in Kraevo and later stated that Kalushev engaged in sexual activity with him.
  • Tatyana Zaharieva: The founder and director of the private school “Cosmos,” where 15-year-old Alexander Makulev was enrolled after being deregistered from the state register.
  • Sofia Andreeva: The mother of Valeri Andreev, she reportedly shared Kalushev’s teachings and financed some of his activities.
  • Ralitsa Asenova: The mother of Nikolay Zlatkov, who considered Kalushev her son’s spiritual father.

Kalushev’s Interests and Communications

Investigators discovered notes believed to have been written by Kalushev indicating an interest in Bulgaria’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and the potential privatization of Sofia’s municipal heating company, Toplofikatsiya Sofia. Other notes suggested a focus on environmental and green policies. Kalushev and his mother, Stela Dimitrova-Maistorova, exchanged messages via an encrypted mobile application until February 1st. His mother stated that Kalushev often spoke about death, wishing for it to occur in a way that would prevent rebirth, but never directly about suicide.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the Petrohan deaths is ongoing, with authorities examining the complex web of relationships, alleged abuses, and potential motives behind the tragedy. The case has raised concerns about institutional failures and the need for greater oversight of groups operating with limited accountability. Materials from the investigation have been submitted to the Parliament Speaker, Raya Nazaryan.
