Formula 1 is poised to return to South Africa with a confirmed Grand Prix at the iconic Kyalami Circuit,scheduled for 2027. This marks a notable milestone for motorsport in Africa, ending a 30-year absence from the F1 calendar as the last South African Grand Prix in 1993. Alongside this exciting development, Formula 1 has solidified its commitment to its historic European race, extending the Monaco Grand Prix agreement through 2035.

South Africa’s Return: A Decade in the Making

The South African cabinet recently approved the submission from the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture to host the Formula 1 race at Kyalami, located north of Johannesburg. Minister Kumumbudzo Ntshaweni officially confirmed the bid, emphasizing that the event is entirely funded by the South African private sector. “South Africa will seek to host Formula 1 at Kyalami in 2027,” stated Minister Ntshaweni, “The bid is fully funded by the South African private sector and, if triumphant, will contribute to job creation and economic development.”

the agreement currently proposes an initial three-year deal, guaranteeing a grand Prix presence through 2029. This commitment demonstrates a long-term vision for Formula 1’s presence in the region. Crucially, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) has already given its approval for the necessary upgrades to Kyalami Circuit to meet Grade 1 standards – the highest level of safety certification required for Formula 1 events. These upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, ensuring the circuit is fully prepared to welcome the pinnacle of motorsport.

Kyalami circuit: A Historic Venue

Kyalami has a rich history in Formula 1, having hosted 23 Grands Prix between 1967 and 1993. The circuit is renowned for its challenging layout and passionate fanbase.
