Devastating Wildfires Force Evacuations Near Plovdiv, Bulgaria

A rapidly escalating wildfire is currently impacting the villa zone of Pesnopoy, located in the Plovdiv region of Bulgaria, prompting the evacuation of 40 residents. Fueled by strong winds, the blaze is spreading quickly, resulting in significant property damage and leaving some evacuees facing a night exposed to the elements.

Expanding Damage and Displacement

As of today, July 9th, 2025, the fire has consumed approximately 30 structures, ranging from ample homes to smaller, unoccupied buildings. The situation remains volatile, with the number of affected properties continuing to rise. Evacuees were able to salvage some personal possessions, but many are now without immediate shelter. This mirrors the increasing trend of displacement seen globally due to climate-change exacerbated wildfires; in 2023, wildfires displaced over 230,000 people worldwide, according to the UNHCR.

Firefighting Efforts and Regional Response

The fire ignited around 6:00 PM local time and is burning near the administrative boundaries of Hisarya and Kaloyanovo municipalities. Currently, six firefighting teams from Karlovo, Hisarya, and Plovdiv are battling the blaze.Reinforcements are en route, with additional firefighters dispatched from Sofia to assist in containment efforts. Local volunteers are also providing support to both the firefighting crews and the displaced residents.

Challenging Conditions and Ongoing Risk

The strong winds are proving to be a major obstacle, accelerating the fire’s spread and hindering firefighting operations. Dry conditions throughout the region have also contributed to the fire’s intensity. Authorities are urging residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and prepared for potential evacuation. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
