Elena Curtoni Triumphs in Val di Fassa Super-G, Goggia’s Cup Hopes Alive
Val di Fassa, Italy – Elena Curtoni secured a thrilling victory in the Women’s Super-G race at the Coppa del Mondo in Val di Fassa on Sunday, marking a triumphant day for the Italian ski team. The win follows two downhill victories by Laura Pirovano, showcasing Italy’s dominance on home snow. Asja Zenere claimed third place, achieving her first career podium finish.
Italian Dominance on the Podium
The Italian team celebrated a remarkable 1-2 finish with Curtoni taking gold and Zenere securing bronze. Zenere’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as she is primarily a giant slalom skier. “I had a super race: I didn’t imagine the podium and it’s even more beautiful like this,” Zenere commented, according to Corriere della Sera.
Race Results and Championship Implications
Laura Pirovano finished eighth, while Sofia Goggia placed ninth. Despite slipping to ninth, Goggia’s position in the Super-G standings improved due to Alice Robinson’s performance. Robinson, who was tied for third place with Romane Miradoli, was overtaken by Zenere.
Goggia now holds a 63-point lead over Robinson (449 to 386) in the race for the Super-G cup with one event remaining. If Robinson wins the final race in Lillehammer, Goggia needs to finish no lower than sixth to secure the title.
Curtoni’s Journey to Victory
This victory marks Curtoni’s third career win, her first since December 16, 2022, when she won the downhill race in St. Moritz. The win is particularly meaningful given Curtoni’s history with injuries, including a fractured coccyx sustained in a fall at St. Moritz the following year. “It’s been too long since I sat in the leader’s chair,” Curtoni said, as reported by Corriere della Sera. “But I’ve always believed in it, even though recovering from an injury that left my mark was tough.”
Goggia’s Struggles and Future Prospects
Goggia acknowledged struggling with her skis during the race. “My skis were out of control, in certain points, in the curves, I didn’t even suppose about reaching the next door,” she stated. Despite the difficulties, she managed to limit the damage and maintain her lead in the Super-G standings. A strong performance in Lillehammer will be crucial for Goggia to secure her fifth downhill cup and first Super-G cup.
Italian Success Continues
This win represents the 147th World Cup victory for Italy, extending their undefeated streak to four races. The recent successes of Goggia, Pirovano, and now Curtoni position the Italian team strongly for the finals in Lillehammer, where Pirovano has a chance to win the downhill cup.
