Jan Bendig: From Roma Ghetto to Latin Music Star

Jan Bendig, a Czech singer and songwriter, has captivated audiences with his unique blend of Latin music and Romani influences. His journey, marked by hardship, resilience, and a commitment to his roots, has made him a role model for young Roma people and a prominent figure in the Czech music scene.

Early Life and Challenges

Born on Valentine’s Day to a large Roma family, Bendig’s early life was defined by poverty and prejudice. Growing up in Třebechovice pod Oreb, his family faced job loss and relocation to a Roma ghetto. He recalled times of hunger, even resorting to stealing food with his siblings. His father later secured work in England, and the family moved to Liverpool in 2006.

Bendig’s father, a guitarist, recognized and nurtured his son’s musical talent, helping him gain confidence after experiencing bullying in school. The family formed the band Gipsy Brothers, providing a foundation for Bendig’s future career.

Rising to Fame: SuperStar and Early Success

Bendig first gained national attention in 2008 by winning a singing competition, Academy Idol. In 2009, he participated in the Czech Slovak SuperStar competition, reaching the finals and finishing in 4th place. His father strategically entered him into the competition as a means of returning the family to the Czech Republic. Following SuperStar, Bendig launched his solo career and made his acting debut in the film Bastards.

At 16, he purchased an apartment in Prague and enrolled in a private International Conservatory, where he unexpectedly reunited with his sister, who had been adopted as a child.

Setbacks and Reinvention

Despite initial success, Bendig faced financial difficulties as his popularity waned. He struggled to manage his finances and eventually found himself in a precarious situation, even considering a job as a cinema cashier. A turning point came when he joined the boy band New Element, but he soon realized it wasn’t the right fit.

A New Chapter with Lukáš Rejmon

Bendig’s life took a positive turn when he met Lukáš Rejmon, who became his partner, manager, and fiancé. Together, they began to rebuild his career, starting with the low-budget music video for a song he wrote for Rejmon. A crucial breakthrough came with the duet “Bloudí” featuring Markéta Konvičková, a Latin-infused song sung in Roma-Czech. This song garnered over a million views on YouTube within a month and marked a turning point in his career.

Musical Style and Recognition

Bendig’s fusion of Latin music and Romani elements has become his signature style. He is now recognized as a role model for young Roma people, often referred to as the “Roma prince.”

Recent Challenges and Future Plans

Bendig and Rejmon have faced personal and professional challenges, including Rejmon’s legal issues in 2020 related to accusations of pimping, from which he received a two-year probation. They also addressed a controversial incident at Český slavík in 2023, where Bendig was sprinkled with flour, which was determined to be a prearranged event.

The couple is currently engaged and plans to start a family, though they prioritize financial stability before having children. They have purchased a dream home on the outskirts of Prague and share it with their five dogs.
