public hearing happening Tuesday for proposed Omaha city budget

On Tuesday, there will be a public hearing over Mayor John Ewing Jr.’s first budget proposal and capital enhancement program for Omaha.

The budget, introduced in July, includes increases for the fire and police departments. For Omaha firefighters, the mayor’s 2026 budget proposal includes a $4.2 million increase.

The mayor’s budget plan also keeps the tax levy flat while increasing the General Fund by 5.6%. The biggest chunk of that increase will come from investments in both equipment and personnel for OPD.

Ewing is also looking to address city parks, poverty, homelessness, affordable housing, and roads.

From 1-4 p.m. tuesday, budget hearings are scheduled for individual city departments such as pubic works, law, and human resources.

The public hearing over ewing’s recommended budget will start at 6:30 p.m. at 1819 Farnam Street. watch it live on the city’s website.

Metro debris drop-off sites open Tuesday following destructive storm

Those that have tree debris to drop off following weekend storms can visit one of the drop-off sites around the metro Tuesday.

Officials say a site at Ta-Ha-zouka Park at 905 Elkhorn Drive will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Another site at Heffelfinger Park will also be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.Tuesday.

The City of Omaha says there will be no curbside pickup.

There are three drop-off options for residents of Blair: 3rd Avenue and Colfax street, the parking lot of Veteran’s Memorial Baseball Field, and the parking lot at Hansen and Angels Share drives.

The gretna Crossing Park soccer Complex is also available as a site until further notice.

Some people utilizing the sites have expressed frustration over the wait times. First Alert 6 is told by some residents that they waited in line for over two hours at the Elkhorn location.

Our weather team found storms included two separate rounds with winds that topped 80 miles per hour Saturday morning and night.

Status: Power has been restored to over 99% of the nearly 40,000 customers affected by the weekend storms. Fewer than 100 customers remain without power, primarily north of the Omaha metro.

Situation: blair was one of the areas hardest hit by the storms.
Debris Removal: The City of Blair is offering two rounds of debris pickup. Residents should place debris between the street and sidewalk (without blocking either). Drop-off sites are also available.
Schedule: A five-day warning will be given before the second pickup round.
Aid: The Salvation Army provided breakfast and cleanup kits to residents on Sunday, and 100 meals were distributed Monday.

3. Atlantic,Iowa – child Hit by Car

Incident: An 8-year-old child was hit by a car in Atlantic,Iowa,near 6th and Birch streets around 8 p.m. Monday. Injuries: The child sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines.
Investigation: The iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.

4. Omaha Metro School Start Dates

Tuesday, August 12th: Millard, Elkhorn, Fremont, and some Papillion La-Vista schools begin. Monday, August 11th: Ralston and Creighton Prep (9th grade students only).
